folkWISE was a not-for-profit development organisation, existing from 2003 to 2009, run by performers for the benefit of performers, based in the British Isles - namely Wales, Ireland, Scotland and England. The aim was to support and encourage professionals in all aspects of their work and career and to promote their work to the world at large. folkWISE was a properly constituted limited company, however after a number of years operation and several cooperative projects the board decided that returning to unlimited status was a good move as the formalities of filing annual foinancial reports and company was falling on the shoulders of volunteer who for various reasons had less time for these activitied. Therefore the company was officially wound up. The old folkWISE board still operates as the BritFOLK committee
